A Pleasant Surprise...

When I wake up every morning, the first thing I do is to check my emails.  Here're one from a patient who had moved away, and I have not seen her for at least 2 years. Dr. Alex,

Thought I'd share this with you. I had a dental appointment yesterday in Cypress, TX and received compliments for the work done on my teeth. So, it would only be appropriate to pass on this info to you since you did all the great work. As you know, I have moved around several times since I knew you back in San Jose; thus saw different dentists after I stopped seeing you. Well, I have gotten compliments from all the dental offices I've been to since. Both dentists and hygienists alike have told me how wonderful the work was and that they couldn't tell my veneer apart from the rest of my teeth. The white fillings are holding up and looking good. I even had co-workers who inquired where my dentist was because they wanted the same dentist who made my teeth look so good.

I truly appreciate all the great work you provided me over the years and am glad I got to know you. I miss going to your Saratoga office because your entire staff always made me feel welcome and comfortable. Not to mention your office is the most modern, professional, and best designed dental office I've ever been to! Your dedication, aesthetic sense, attention to detail, and care toward your practice and patients give me, and I'm sure all your patients as well, the confidence I feel every time I smile. I feel proud just to be able to show off your work by smiling every day.

And even my husband, Michael, told some of our friends that you were, "probably THE best dentist in the world!" He talked about your interest in design, described how you designed your office, and mentioned your relaxing waiting room. To hear Michael--being an industrial designer, design consultant and strategist--talk about you and your office says a lot about your business practice.

Wish you the best in your continual success!

Best regards,

C.T.

Unexpected Dentistry. Why?

I recently saw a new patient for a consultation on her smile.  Throughout our conversation, she expressed her discontent with her smile which underwent 2 orthodontic treatments and several crowns for the upper anterior teeth.  Some lower teeth were unnecessarily extracted for the previous orthodontic treatment. At time... There were tears in her eyes.

In fact, this is not the first time a patient came to me with tears in her eyes because of regrets, discontentment, and resentment for past treatments done to the smile.  Why?

Cosmetic dentistry is often advertised by almost every dentist you can encounter.  Many dentists do have the services offered listed something along the line of ..." General and Cosmetic Dentistry".  As a patient, to avoid disappointing results, you may want to consider:

-  The dentist's training and credential with reputable institutions such as the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry  - www.aacd.com

-  Ask to see the work in detailed and up-close photographic images

-  Ask about what was done and how the result of the dentist's work was achieved

-  Pursue multiple consultations with different dentists before you make a final decision on the treatments

-  Be prepared to invest in adequate treatment time, because "a beautiful smile in two visits" is a marketing concept:  Excellence, Precision, and Quality dental work require dedication to the art and science,  and taking the time to help achieve the best possible outcome.

Don't be sold to a business-driven dental office.  That is how you can prevent yourself from coming home with unexpected dentistry.

Root Canal or Not?

Did you know that tooth pain can be caused by factors other then deep cavities and typical nerve problems?

For Example: If you are a serious grinder, an episode of uncontrolled grinding can cause trauma to the bedding of nerve tissues around the root of your tooth. As a result, that tooth may exhibit a dull ache, sensitivity to hot and cold, and pain on chewing.

In this scenario a root canal is not necessary if the traumatic bite force is recognized and eliminated from the bite.  Hence, before you agree to have your tooth root canaled, please make sure all treatment options have been exhausted.
